Liminal Letters

The newsletter that shares lessons and reflections on the art and business of editing.

Course updates, special offers and honest opinions on the editing and publishing industry – plus insights into the life of a small business owner: how I juggle a toddler (not literally), limited hours and high ambitions while trying to cultivate meaningful work.

Choosing to build a career around books and storytelling is both liberating and exciting – but it’s also a decision that comes with its own particular challenges. There’s no clear path, no set curriculum and no one to tell you whether you’re doing things right (or how to fight the incoming robot overlords)

That’s why it can be comforting to hear from someone who’s navigated it, and who thinks out loud about craft, business and the publishing industry, so the journey feels a little less solitary.

That’s what’s this newsletter is all about.

I value you as a thought leader in our industry, so I always want to know what you are thinking and learning when it comes to fiction craft and the business of being a freelance editor. You’re a good writer and a deep thinker.

Kristen Tate, The Blue Garret

I love your honesty. I love your willingness to expose your vulnerability. You make it easier to be a flawed human being trying to do something fulfilling and useful.

Patricia, BC Canada

Not quite ready to dive into a course?

If you’ve found your way to Liminal Pages and you’re curious about fiction editing but not quite ready to dive into the training, signing up to this newsletter is a good place to start. You’ll get a feel for how I think about editing, what I value in the craft, and whether Liminal Pages is the right fit for you – without any pressure. Just hang around for the comradery, if you like!

What to expect

In these letters, I write about things that are on my mind that I genuinely care about: the craft of fiction editing, the business of running a freelance practice, and the industry we’re all navigating together. Specifically:

  • Honest opinions on the editing and publishing industry
  • Real insights into the freedoms and frustrations of running your own editorial business
  • Course updates and special offers

Who it’s for

Liminal Letters is written for people who love fiction and want to build a career around editing novels – whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your practice. If you care about the craft, take your work seriously and are drawn to the idea of working for yourself on your own terms, you’ll probably enjoy my insights and musings.

I read your newsletter to get the insights of someone whose perspective I value. I also like that you don’t write too often, or without something real to share.

Tim Reinboth, science writer and editor

Your newsletter is pretty darn perfect, in my opinion.

When you sign up

You’ll hear from me every day for the first five days in a short introductory series designed to give you a proper sense of who I am and what Liminal Pages is about. By the end of it, you’ll know:

  • How I built my editorial business (and why I pivoted into training)
  • What I believe good fiction editing training actually looks like
  • What it really takes to build a confident, sustainable freelance editing business
  • Everything Liminal Pages has to offer, so you can decide what’s right for you

After that, I’ll drop back to once or twice a month.

Who am I?

Liminal Letters is written by me, Sophie Playle – an editor-turned-educator, fiction specialist and someone who likes to drop Buffy the Vampire Slayer references into course materials. I write around the constraints of real life, sharing how I juggle a toddler (not literally), limited hours and high ambitions while trying to cultivate meaningful work.

Yours is probably my favourite among a half-dozen or more editorial newsletters that I receive. Your focus on fiction editing is valuable, and your enthusiasm for it really shines through.

David Bland, Context Editorial

Your newsletter feels like much more than just ‘here’s another link!’ – it’s an actual email with thoughtful information to digest.

Simone Jopling, Refined by Heart

I really enjoy your newsletters. You have the ability to write about your experiences and keep it interesting and engaging – which is kind of amazing considering I subscribe to most other newsletters in hopes of just getting useful info.
